A crime novel about a father, a daughter, and the people who raised her.
Twenty-six years ago, a bomb took Kate Keegan's mother and blew her childhood across a street in Eagle Rock. The city convicted a radical reporter for it. Her father, the Robbery-Homicide detective who caught him, has spent every year since sure he got the right man.
Now Kate is a homicide detective with her first case: a retired bomb-squad driver dead in his Buick in the carport of the Gold Watch, a building full of old cops. It is staged as a suicide, with the gun in the wrong hand. The only man in Los Angeles who knows the old bombings better than she does is the father she hasn't spoken to in a year.
Eleven days before the election, the bombs start again. Every lead runs back inside the department, and closer to home. To finish what her mother started, Kate has to work beside the man who let her down, and find out what each of them is willing to lose to say the truth out loud.
