A practical order, not a rulebook
Read the seven stages in sequence when you are learning the system, or jump directly to the pressure point in a draft. Each stage gives you one primary method and a few supporting references. The goal is always the same: diagnose the story clearly enough to make your own creative decision.
- 01
CHARACTER OBJECTIVES
Give every scene a playable WANT
Story starts when somebody wants a result they can pursue through behavior. Make the objective specific, actable, and opposed so the scene has a target and an implicit finish line.
Read the WANT Framework →Next connection:How WANT creates opinion and behavior - 02
SCENE CONSTRUCTION
Turn objectives into change
A scene drives forward through Goal → Conflict → Outcome. A sequel processes the cost through Reaction → Dilemma → Decision. Sequences combine both into a larger dramatic movement.
Build Scene, Sequel, and Sequence →Practical staging:Turn dialogue conflict into blocking and reaction - 03
CONFLICT & OPPOSITION
Put incompatible forces in the same frame
Conflict is not noise or compulsory violence. It is incompatible objectives, values, systems, or environments pressing against the same outcome. Opposition makes the character change tactics and reveals what matters.
Design conflict without a simple villain → - 04
ESCALATION & REVELATION
Make every beat add pressure or information
A scene stays alive when each tactic meets stronger resistance and each beat changes what the audience or character knows. Rolling reveals keep the story delivering instead of idling in neutral.
Build rolling reveals →Supporting lens:Choose Mystery Box, Magic Show, or both - 05
ACTION & VISUAL STORYTELLING
Reveal character through decisions under pressure
Action matters when physical pressure forces a consequential choice. Write what can be filmed, let behavior carry intention, and use cuts, omission, and lean prose to control the reader's eye.
Write action as decision → - 06
FEATURE STRUCTURE
Scale the same engine into four Reels
Put WANT inside the scene, the scene inside a sequence, the sequence inside a Reel, and four connected Reels inside the feature. Each Reel works like a mini-movie with its own question, turn, and payoff.
Use the Four-Reel Method → - 07
DIAGNOSIS
Run the scene through Scene Doctor
Paste in a scene to examine objectives, opposition, escalation, reversals, and what changes by the end. The diagnosis identifies pressure points; the rewrite remains yours.
