Character

Build characters who generate story: WANT → opinion → voice → visual identity → relationship → fear → lie/truth → diagnosis.

From biography to dramatic behavior

A character becomes playable when desire produces choices under pressure. Use this path to move from an immediate objective into opinions, voice, appearance, relationships, and the internal contradiction that makes change possible.

  1. 01

    WANT

Give the character something specific to get

Start with an objective an actor can pursue before the scene ends. A playable WANT converts psychology into tactics, behavior, success, and failure.

    Read the WANT Framework
  2. 02

    OPINION & BEHAVIOR

    Let desire generate personality

Characters form opinions about whatever helps or blocks what they want. Those opinions shape tactics, judgment, rhythm, and conflict—so personality grows from dramatic need instead of a list of traits.

Turn WANT into opinion and behavior
  3. 03

    VOICE

Find the way this person occupies a scene

Voice is more than vocabulary. It lives in agenda, judgment, rhythm, disclosure, silence, and how expression changes under pressure.

    Create a distinct character voice
  4. 04

    VISUAL IDENTITY

    Make backstory visible before dialogue

Wear patterns, posture, props, silhouette, and costume can reveal history and priorities before the character speaks. Build a visual autobiography, then test whether the design is distinctive enough to survive at a glance.

    Design the visual autobiography
  5. 05

    RELATIONSHIPS & OPPOSITION

    Define the character through collision

Relationships become dramatic when people want incompatible outcomes from one another. Ask what each person wants, what binds them together, what leverage each holds, and how the relationship changes.

    Build relationships with opposing wants
  6. 06

    FEAR & DEFENSE

Turn inner fear into visible protection

Fear predicts a loss. Defense tries to prevent it. The behavior provides short-term relief while creating the next story problem.

    Build fear-driven behavior
  7. 07

    LIE · TRUTH · ARC

Pressure the belief until choice proves change

The Lie protects the character from fear. The Truth offers a harder way to live. Build the arc by making the old strategy fail and the new choice cost something.

    Build the Lie/Truth character arc

    DIAGNOSIS

Run the character through Character Doctor

Test wants, opposition, voice, dramatic function, and whether the character creates story. Use the diagnosis to locate weak pressure points, then make the creative choice yourself.
