// WORKSHEET · LESSON 02 OF 07

The First 30 Seconds

Plan the hook: what you plant, what you refuse to answer, and the reveals that buy the audience’s patience.

NOTHING FILLED IN YET

Everything you type is saved to this browser only, as you type. No account, no upload, nothing sent anywhere. Two things follow from that: it won’t be waiting for you on another device, and it isn’t permanent — some browsers, Safari in particular, clear this kind of storage after about a week without a visit, and a private window or a cleared cache takes it immediately. Print or save as PDF to keep anything you want to keep.

01THE QUESTION YOU REFUSE TO ANSWER

The opening is a promise, not an explanation.

Plant it visually, through behavior, through contradiction. Do not explain it.

02TWO TRUTHS THAT DON’T SIT TOGETHER

Hope against despair. Trust against betrayal. Two opposing truths in immediate contact create the friction that makes an audience lean in.

What is on the surface. What is said, shown, performed.

What is underneath. What is felt, hidden, contradicted.

Name the shot, the line, or the moment where they collide.

03ROLLING REVEALS

Aim for one of each early, then pull back. Reward attention regularly while withholding the main answer.

The reveal that reframes what they thought they were watching.

The small detail that rewards someone paying close attention.

The image, sound, or texture that hits the gut before the brain.

04WITHHOLDING THE WIDE

Close-ups ask questions. Wide shots answer them. Control which one the audience gets, and when.

05THE OPENING CHECKLIST

Tick these off before you lock the opening.

Built from the Playbook’s Opening Checklist, Rolling Reveals, and the Withholding the Wide section.
